Migration On A Global Scale - 1470 Words
Within the last few decades, there has been a great influx of Asians who have migrated to the United States. In 1985, Asian immigrants made up less than half of the total immigrant population, many of which have settled in New York City and California. The ââ¬Å"selective phenomenonâ⬠known as migration has been impelled by the ââ¬Å"demographic, economic, social and psychological attributesâ⬠of the location (Desbarats 305). Migration on a global scale is influenced by factors such as available alternatives to those considering the move, how much distance is covered, ways of transportation and the state policies, both complex and restrictive, that oversee who enters and leaves. There are three stages of migration that Thais experienced. The firstâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Occupation became the driving force for some; the numbers of professional immigration, however, were lower than compared to other Asians. Unlike the low rate of workers, there is an ââ¬Å"increasing number of Thai youngsters, in keeping with the national tradition of openness to Western influencesâ⬠(Desbarats 306). It was believed that education through the United States would lead to professional success. Student visas were only obtained if the student had financial support as well as the incentive to go back to Thailand ââ¬Å"usually in the form of financial ties with their home countryâ⬠(Desbarats 307). Many immigrants found themselves burdened by the conditions of living in the states. The financial and psychological struggles were not worth it when immigrants were risking to ââ¬Å"construct networks, maintain homeland ties and, ensure that remittances reach families left behindâ⬠(Barkan 19). Immigrants who stay in the states try to balance assimilation to the dominant American culture while still want to feel a sense of their homeland. They try to make a connection whether it be through food, familiar neighbors or the knowledge of language and dance which gets lost in the later generations. The ââ¬Å"primary contact with American cultureâ⬠happens through interaction with their American peers (Tangsujjapoj 3). Social participation is what breaks the way for acculturation of immigrants because it aids them in establishing their own identity

Trumanââ¬â¢s Decision To Bomb Japan In World War II â⬠Free Samples
Question: Discuss about the Trumans Decision To Bomb Japan In World War II. Answer: Introduction: The bombs were developed by and with the supervision of Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas McArthur, William Leahy and assistant secretary of war John J. McCloy. The two bombs were dropped on two cities of Japan Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9 in 1945, respectively. Apart from the indelible scar that the bombs had left on the human history, there has been a long history of bombings. The focus of this essay will be the decision of bombing the Japanese cities and whether it was made with a view to end the long term hostility between the two nations and make Japan surrender to the US and its allies in Second World War. Discussion: There is a long debate regarding the bombings. Erstwhile American president Truman, within two weeks of being sworn in as president, was informed by Stimson, who were the secretary of War at that time, that within four months the most dangerous weapon would be ready for use (Herken, 2014). However, Truman was not of the opinion of using the bombs. Even the scientists in the Manhattan project were divided between a camp that wished to use the bombs to use where it is most effective and to have a military demonstration in Japan. (Reed, 2014). American government also tried to assure Soviet Russia that Germany will not make a solid comeback into the war. The military surrender of Japan was necessary at this point in the war in order to consolidate the powers of Western nations. Secondly, Trumans decision was indirectly affected by previous president Roosevelt legacy that states unconditional surrender of the enemies to end the war. On May 8, 1945, as Germans surrendered unconditionally, Americans desire for total victory in the pacific were growing more intense. Even the two nations, America and Japan were having extreme racial hostility towards each other. Many Americans were led to believe that the Jaspanese emperor Hirohito was the reason behind Japan launching an aggressive war against enemies. Japanese also embodied a true Japanese spirit into emperor Hirohito. In mid-July of 1945, Truman met British secretary Clement Attlee and Soviet leader Josef Stalin in Postdam conference, to ensure Soviet participation in the war against Japan and to rebuild the future of Europe with the knowledge of successful testing of the bomb in New Mexico desert prior to attending the conference (Selden Selden, 2015). Finally, Truman, Attlee and the nationalist government of china declared the result of Postdam conference that announced that Japan will face utter destruction unless they surrender (Messer, 2017). Historians have had differing views both in support for and against the decision. Some revisionist historians argued that the Americans wanted Japan to surrender before Soviet could make entry into the pacific war. Andrew Rotter argued that Truman wanted to save American lives as well as win the battle against Japan without minimal loss. Thomas Zeiler concluded in the chronicled of post-bombing brutality that the bombing was done out of military reasons rather than political reasons (Prados, 2013). Historians also feel that the bigger shock and total surrender from Japan was observed not by the bombings, but when Soviet declared a war against Japan two days after the bombs were dropped (Wilson, 2013). Japanese historian Yuki Tanaka said that Soviet would destroy the age-old imperial system and execute the royal family. A survey revealed that 85% among the American citizens were in support of the bombings (Messer, 2017). Although the percentage of Americans dropped to a much lower number at present, only the older people now stick to their opinion in support for the decision. Americans were fearing the aggressive Japanese military actions and both the countries were hostile towards the others race. Professor of History in Harvard University, Charles Maier argued in an interview that it would have been very difficult for Truman to justify the prolongation of the war, which would have brought a great number of casualties to the American soldiers and citizens alike, when he was already aware of the nuclear weapon at his disposal. President Truman can never be dismissed as impatient in taking his decisions. He had explored every option at his hand before declaring the ultimatum against Japan. On the other hand, pressure was building in the military situations in both the camps. President Truman did what he could do to secure the lives of the American citizens. Conclusion: Million lives were lost within a few days of the two bombings. Lingering radioactive effects of the nuclear bombs on Japanese people caused lifelong incurable diseases. Regardless of the unavoidable circumstances leading to taking the decision to bomb, as has been discussed above, the lives of half million innocent Japanese were put in permanent misery. Although America successfully ended with a victory over the Pacific war, the common peoples miseries were unbearable and haunt them till date. References: Herken, G. Also she wanted me to understand that even though I disappointed her by getting pregnant at an early she still never stop loving me. I had a lot of responsi il t i ies to take on and learn but atter all that I nad watched my mom do tor me it was not that hard for me to do. My educational experiences were not very fun for me, but I am glad that I have made it as far that I have. When I first started school at age 5 1 hated it because I thought that I was only suppose to go to school on the days when my mom did not have anything to do, if I thought she was going to the grocery store or some where else I thought I should stay home to go to. After I got past that little stage school was actually really fun for me and to me because I had a ot of friends and I liked school. My senior year in high school is when I had to drop out and get my GED after I became pregnant, but I went straight into the classes and I got my diploma when every one else in my normal high school class did. After working in the educational field for approximately the past 6 years I finally decided that I want to try going back to school and getting my Bachelors degree in education at which time I started taking classes through Kaplan University. When I first started to take classes I dont think it was actually sinking in that I was really in college ecause now that I look back at it I dont think I took it serious enough, but now I am ready for college and I am really eager in learning. I have made up in my mind that this is something that I really want to do so I have buckled down and every chance that I get I am reading a book or looking up something online that will help me further my education. I became a wife at the age of 20 and my daughter was 2 years old at the time and a few months later my husband and I became parents again of a little boy. My husband and I had been together for almost 4 years before we got married. One month after my son was born my husband was sent to Desert Shield Desert Storm (1991) which was also 5 months after we had gotten married. That was another one of the hard times that I went through in life with new baby and my husband being sent to war not know if he would make it back home to us. Now everyday I thank god that he has blessed us with 18 years 11 months and 22 days of marriage and he was safe and sound made it back home to us. Our family has now grown to be a happy normal family with my husband, my self we have a 22 year old daughter that is living on here own in the city. Then we have my baby my 18 year old son who is in his first year of college and Just eager to go off and see the world. I am happy now that I decided to go back to school and get my degree, and so are my kids and my husband, matter of fact me decision had such an impact on my husband that he also has started to take classes himself to get his degree in Criminal Justice. I also have gotten so many more opportunities that I probably would have never gotten before as far as working with special needs kids at the schools and in the community because everyone seem to like the way I know how to handle them.

Pietro Lorenzetti essays
Pietro Lorenzetti essays The first work that I visited was Pietro Lorenzettis panels from an altarpiece showing the Enthroned Virgin and Child, with kneeling donor and angels. The piece immediately caught my eye because of its resemblance to two other works from the Pre-Renaissance, Cimabues Madonna Enthroned and Giottos Madonna Enthroned. Pietro Lorenzettis piece is from Siena during the 1320s. It is about 30 x 60 inches and done in tempera and tooled gold on a wooden panel. Through a dark outer room, the piece is visible through a doorway with a stone archway. The architecture of the room and surrounding rooms emphasizes the Gothic influence of the period and brings and pieces together nicely in that historical setting. In the room there are also other altarpieces from the same pre-Renaissance period. The background of the piece was done primarily in the tooled gold. There is molding in the shape of a triple bubble above the heads of Madonna and Child. She is seated on a throne, Child on knee, and you can see by looking at her hand that the proportions are not quite right because it is larger than it should be. Her dress is detailed in gold. The golden halos around the heads are circular despite the direction in which the head is turned. The brush strokes for these halos are done circularly and contrast the brush strokes on the rest of the panel. Most subject matter of art in the Proto-Renaissance was limited to religion and more specifically, Christianity. The paintings were not realistic, with images looking flat and somewhat abstract. This was due to the fact that priorities were to communicate the religious subject matter and not to critique naturalistic style. As Ive mentioned, Lorenzettis piece shares many similarities with Cimabues and Giottos pieces. During this time there was the beginnings of a naturalistic emphasis, but artists lacked the knowledge o...

Horror Films In American Cinema Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 9000 words - 1
Horror Films In American Cinema - Movie Review Example Horror movies are an all-time favorite for those looking to learn from the world of the unknown that surrounds us. Although most of the movies are fictional stories with fictional depictions, the research that goes into developing the story and the screenplay rely vastly on real-life incidents and imaginative capacities of the production team. Although the 1890s was when horror movies began in cinematic history, it was not till epic creations like Frankenstein, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and movies of the 1920s which took over the horror film industry, which had thrived on petty popularity till then, and comprised of vampire, monsters and ghost stories. Fables that had witches and angels fighting over the safety of human life were also created during this age. Prominent movies that dotted the timeline till 1920 include the Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1911 (French), The Vampires 1915 (German), The Vampire in 1913, A Fool There Was in 1915, and so many more. While these films were mostly silent and marked the explorations of imagination by directors of the silent era, prominent movies started emerging with better-defined screenplays and images after the year of 1920. The 1921 European movie The Death of Dracula and the 1922 German movie Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror were prominent creations that rocked the American movi e industry, owing to the creation and growth of Hollywood the ultimate American movie industry. Although Hollywood had a long time to grow, there were other movies like the Frankenstein films like the 1915 movie Life Without Soul by Joseph Smiley and the 1910 movie Frankenstein by J. Searle Dawley. These movies would be of variable length and would be of historic importance to students of cinema making one day, but at that point in time, these movies were various adaptations of the novels that inspired them and were more of a pre-film idea of how to adapt the story to the screen effectively.Ã

The Tragedy of the Holocaust Essay Example for Free
The Tragedy of the Holocaust Essay Most individuals in society think of literature as just a simple story that the author creates. What most individuals donââ¬â¢t know is that authors have a meaning for writing literature, not just simply for pleasure. Most authors write literature to show a message to the audience whether itââ¬â¢s a personal story or a historical event. The author does this by providing the audience with visual image and emotion that is created throughout the story. In the short story ââ¬Å"The Shawlâ⬠, author Cynthia Ozick shows the audience the horrible events that took place during the Holocaust and how much individuals suffered during this time. While reading ââ¬Å"The Shawlâ⬠, the reader can feel and imagine throughout the book all the suffering and pain that the Holocaust caused the Jewish people. This short story is great for individuals to know what really took place during this time in life and why itââ¬â¢s so important to make sure that our society never turns to this again. After an Individual reads the short story ââ¬Å"The Shawlâ⬠, one will see the tragic events that happened during the holocaust. Author Cynthia Ozick starts of her short story by introducing the three sisters that are the main characters in the story, which are Magdna, Rosa and Bella. Rosa was the oldest sister, Bella was fourteen years old and Madna was just a fifteen-month-old baby. Age difference during the Holocaust did not matter. If you were a baby, child, teenager or adult, German soldiers were determine to kill any Jewish individual during this time. Another thing during the Holocaust was how horrible the living conditions were in the concentration camps. While reading, the audience can imagine the living scene at the concentration camp. As Rosa describes the scene of the concentration camp, the audience can picture seeing dirt, bugs and diseases that surrounded them. Rosa also informs the audience of how beauty can be so close to evil. While Rosa is looking inside the concentration camp she sees an electric fence holding her sisters and herself in the darkness. Rosa states about the electric fence that, ââ¬Å"The farther she was from the fence, the more clearly the voices crowded her. The lamenting voices strummed so convincingly, so passionately, it was impossible to suspect them of being phantomsâ⬠(Ozick, pg.2655). On the other side of the fence, Rosa explains seeing the beauty of nature that most individuals today take for granted. While Rosa is rushing trying to give Magda back her shawl, she notices outside the beauty of nature standing outside the iron electric fence. Rosa states, ââ¬Å"On the other side of the steel fence, far away, there were green meadows speckled with dandelions and deep-colored violets; beyond them, even farther, innocent tiger lilies, tall, lifting their orange bonnets (Ozick, pg2655). As Rosa shares this vision with the audience, itââ¬â¢s sad to see how you can see something beautiful but yet itââ¬â¢s far away and individuals like Rosa are stuck behind the iron electric fence that is guarding them from this beauty. Rosa shows a point that in our society, we take the nature of beauty for granted. We go by life way to fast to actually stop and look at the beauty that nature provides. Rosa needed something to have hope and have something to look for and the beauty of nature brought her peace while suffering during the Holocaust. Itââ¬â¢s the little things in life that helped the Jewish individuals make it threw the Holocaust. Rosa states that, ââ¬Å"In the barracks they spoke of flowers of rain: excrement, thick turd-braids, and the slow stinking maroon waterfall that slunk down from the upper bunks, the stink mixed with a bitter fatty floating smoke that greased Rosaââ¬â¢s skinâ⬠(Ozick, pg2655). Itââ¬â¢s frightening to know that in our society wherever we are, true evil can be so close to pure beauty. The Holocaust is a great example of how the beauty of nature is yet so close to the horrifying concentration camps. Another issue that Ozick shows in her short story, ââ¬Å"The Shawlâ⬠is jealousy. Since many people were suffering during the Holocaust, many Jewish individuals living in the concentration camps were jealous of one another due to the condition of other Jewish individuals clothes or others having more food. Like any other story, Ozick showââ¬â¢s the good guy and bad guy throughout her short story. Ruth, the older sister, puts her life at risk to make sure that her fifteen-month-old sister Magda is safe while Stella, the other sister, was jealous of her little sister Magda. During the Holocaust, many Jewish individuals had to work all day and walk everywhere that they went; there was hardly any rest. When all three sisters would walk, Magda would be carried and wrapped in the shawl. As Stella saw this, her Jealousy and hatred grew more to her little sister Magda. The narrator states that,ââ¬Å" Sometimes Stella carried Magda, But she was jealous of Magdaâ⬠(Ozick, pg2653). Another thing that Stella was Jealous of Magda was the shawl that she had. Rosa always had Magda wrapped around her. The shawl was Magda safety net. Everywhere that Magda went, she was always wrapped around in the shawl and every time Rosa would leave the barracks, she would always hide Magda with the shawl. One cold day, Stella went up to Magda and simply took her shawl away from her. When Rosa asked why Stella did this she simply stated, ââ¬Å"She was coldâ⬠(Ozick, pg2654). By how jealous and selfish Stella was to her sister, this action of taking away Magda shawl resulted in Magda death. Ozick shows throughout her short story how many Jewish individuals suffered from hunger during the concentration camps. Magda was just a baby and needed all the food she could get in order to survive. There would be times that Rosa would not be able to provide food for Magda, which would result in Rosa taking the corner of the shawl and milking it. Rosa states, ââ¬Å"She sucked and sucked, flooding threads with wetness. The shawlââ¬â¢s good flavor, milk of linenâ⬠(Ozick, pg2653). Starvation during the Holocaust also made some Jewish individuals violent and selfish. Stella would not give any food to her sister Magda and would keep everything for herself. Rosa would state that during the Holocaust, ââ¬Å"Stella was ravenous, a growing child herself, but not growing much ââ¬Å"(Ozick, pg2653). Rosa was also frightened of others eating Magda by how tiny she was. Some Jewish individuals during the Holocaust started to turn evil just to get something to eat and a way for them to survive. If it was the result of killing a baby for food, then some Jewish individuals would. Even Magda own sister Stella thought about eating her. That is how horrible hunger had gotten to some Jewish individuals. One day, Ruth states that it sounded that Stella said, ââ¬Å"Lets us devour herâ⬠(Ozick, pg2654) to another individual in the concentration camp. Each day when Rosa would leave Magda in the barrack, she would always worry that someone would kill her for food. The description that Ozick gives throughout her short story of how skinny the Jews were in the concentration camps shows the audience how much the Jews suffered from starvation. The author states, ââ¬Å"The weight of Rosa was becoming less and less; Rosa and Stella were slowly turning into air ââ¬Å"(Ozick, pg2654). At the end of the short story ââ¬Å"The Shawlâ⬠, Ozick shows the audience how heartless the German solderââ¬â¢s, also known as the ââ¬Å"Nazi Partyâ⬠, were during the Holocaust. When Stella takes away Magda shawl, Magda steps outside her confront zone. In panic, Magda searches everywhere in the concentration camp to find her shawl. As Rosa waives the shawl to her, she sees a German solider carrying her out of the distance; itââ¬â¢s to late to save her. Rosa states as Magda was being carried of in the distance ââ¬Å" She was no bigger than a mothâ⬠(Ozick, pg2655). Even though Magda was just an innocent baby searching for her shawl, the German soldiers did not care, their hearts were cold. While Rosa tells the audience about seeing Magda being taking away farther and farther, the reader can feel how heartbroken Rosa is watching her little baby sister being carried to her death. Rosa states, ââ¬Å"All at once Magda was swimming through the air. The whole of Magna travel though loftiness. She looked like a butterfly touching a silver vineâ⬠(Ozick, pg1981). The Holocaust is one of the most tragic events in our history. Itââ¬â¢s important that individuals know and understand what happened during this tragic time. Author Cynthia Ozick short story, ââ¬Å"The shawlâ⬠is a great way for individuals to read, see and feel the pain and suffering that went on during the Holocaust. The author also does a great job explaining the Jewish life while living in concentration camps and seeing the struggles that Jewish individuals had to face. This time period was one of the darkest times in our society. It is important that we never forgot the Holocaust so that way nothing wicked like this will ever happen again in our society. The Holocaust and all the Jewish people that suffered and lost their lives during this time period will never be forgotten.

How Can the Uncertainty Map Help Managers Essay
1. How can the uncertainty map help managers? Pearsonââ¬â¢s uncertainty map provides a framework for analyzing and understanding uncertainty in the innovation process. It addresses the nature of the uncertainty and the way it changes over time, and provides managers with knowledge to make a decision and transform ideas into innovation. It also determines the type of management skills needed for different degrees of uncertainty. The framework separates uncertainty into four quadrants based on basic characterizations: a. uncertainty about ends ââ¬â the eventual target of the project b. uncertainty about means ââ¬â how to achieve the target Drawn on two axes, uncertainty about ends appears on the vertical axis, about means on the horizontal. The axes then divide producing four quadrants, namely: ââ¬â Quadrant 1, also known as exploratory or Blue Sky Research is where there is no clear definition of the target or the means. Here, the organization is experimenting with unfamiliar technologies, and unidentified markets or products. Depending on the manager, ideas and developments may be immediately recognizable as possible commercial products. A technical manager may understand a technology but a commercial manager might see a wide range of commercial opportunities. ââ¬â Quadrant 2 bears the label, Developmental Engineering. It contains ongoing activity within say, manufacturing companies that continually examine production processes looking for inefficiencies and ways to reduce costs. Here the target is clear but means are unidentified. The company may start several different projects centered on different technologies or approaches along the way so there is considerable uncertainty about how to reach the target. A manager will require special project management skills here to ensure either project delivery within budget, or cancellation to avoid escalating costs. ââ¬â Quadrant 3 is the Applications Engineering dimension in which there is somewhat more certainty about how the business will achieve the target, but less certainty regarding the ends. Here they explore the potential uses of known technology, and management efforts center on which markets to enter, as well as discovering how to use the technology most effectively. ââ¬â Quadrant 4 is the dimension with the most certainty. Activities here center mostly on improving existing products or creating new products through a combination of market opportunity and technical capability. This is where companies use innovation to develop new product designs that use minimal and new technology, but dramatically improve appearance and performance. Managers have to make timely decisions because while certainty is highest for them, so it is for the competition. This is where a company can win or lose the race to be first to market, and commercial managers become excited because the project is close t o market with minimal technical newness.

Decolonization Of The Country Of Ghana - 1504 Words
One of the most desirable qualities to achieve is independence. Whether it be regarding intellectual, financial, or emotional aspects of life, striving for independence continues to be a universal concept. For the country of Ghana, independence became a necessity, and this type of freedom could only be obtained through a process called decolonization. Decolonization is when a country removes itself from a location it has colonized, leaving that location independent to govern over itself. The nature of this can be problematic, due to the extensive difficulties of creating a functional country with little time or practice. Decolonization originated from nationalist movements throughout the late 19th and early 20th century, and the observation of older colonies obtaining independence both inspired and guided the country of Ghana to do the same. Understanding that the rewards of decolonization far outweigh the problems it may bring is essential. The desire for decolonization began once countries realized that the colonizing countries were not invincible. Weaknesses were shown during World War II especially. Some of these weakness were the lack of attention and lack of control these colonizing countries had. Improving Intercultural Communication Competence
Question: Discuss about the Improving Intercultural Communication Competence. Answer: Introduction: Culture guides the human practices in a community and is at the heart of effective intercultural communication. Understanding the culture of a particular community is the epitome of correlation between parties from different parts of the globe. To be successful in managing the Australian and the New Zealand business branches, the Japanese manager will need to effective learn the languages, use of gestures, the low-context and low-power distance cultures in the two countries. The Japanese manager should be direct and genuine with words when speaking to Australian and New Zealanders who are a low-context culture. A low-context culture uses direct words to express thoughts and feelings and convey meaning (Nishimura, Nevgi Tella 2008). The two cultures are very straightforward and adore someone who speaks his mind fast and clearly. At the workplace, the managers should give specific directions and make decisions based on facts. At social places, the manager should be very fast to discuss himself, his culture, and his positions at the company to build good social relations with friends. Australians and New Zealanders are receptive to people who are humorous and, the manager should crack jokes to kick start a conversation with ease. The Japanese should carefully utilize non-verbal communication such as maintaining eye contact, physical touching and maintaining personal distance. Nonverbal communication is a key consideration among people of different cultures to avoid offending people (Samovar 2014). Australians and New Zealanders value eye contact in conversation as a measure of sincerity and trustworthiness and the manager should embrace the communication style. Additionally, the manager should shake hands with employees at the workplace as the formal greetings. The distance between two talking people should be an arms-length away, and the manager should ensure minimal physical contact. In a social setting, the manager can use a kiss on the cheek for a well-known female friend or touch on the shoulder when talking to either gender. The manager should adopt a participative communication and an inclusive method of leadership in both New Zealand and Australia being a low-power distance cultures. Power distance notes the differences in opinion on how power is distributed in organizations and, may affect working relationship (Khatri 2009). The two cultures expect their views to count on teams decisions. New Zealanders and Australian adore representation in the high ranks done by staff committees. Organization superiors must adopt a consultative mode of doing ways, soliciting for different views and giving back feedback to workers. The manager should embrace the behavior of rewarding people as individuals and promoting the employees on merit in the two countries. Individualistic cultures value the freedom to achieve personal success and adore the rights to own decisions and achievements (Alagic, Nagata Rimmington 2009). The manager should give work-related privileges on merit. Employees in the two cultures value recognition through merit and favoritism at workplace will result in ill feelings. Australia and New Zealand are a masculine culture and, the manager should encourage a more competitive environment at the workplace and hail success. The masculine culture concentrates on results and getting the work done (Samovar 2014). Moreover, the countries are a short-term orientation culture, and the manager should encourage the achievement of short-term goals. Hence, for efficient managing of the businesses and social interactions, the Japanese manager should understand the culture of Australia and New Zealand. Both countries are a low-context and low-power distance cultures. Additionally, the manager should encourage personal results, masculinity and use non-verbal communication effectively. What threat did the Vikings pose to Carolingian Christianity Essay Example
What threat did the Vikings pose to Carolingian Christianity Paper Viking paganism, with its human sacrifices, bloody rituals and numerous gods, instilled fear into the hearts of many Christians and diluted the Christian faith with their ââ¬Ëlore of trolls, giants, dwarves and elvesââ¬â¢ as mentioned by Viking historian Martin Arnold[1]. With raids in the 9th century and onwards focusing on religious centres across Europe e. g. monasteries and churches, many feared an attack on Christianity, and a threat to religious unity. With early attacks on the monastery at Lindisfarne in 793, where ââ¬ËVikings slaughtered some of the monks, robbed and burned the monasteryââ¬â¢ according to Johannes Bronstedââ¬â¢s book, and other seemingly religious attacks on Iona and Kintyre in Scotland, it seemed Christianity was under attack. [2] Raids continued throughout Western Europe through the 9th century, yet religious motives seemed not to be on the forefront of most Vikingsââ¬â¢ minds. As Gwyn Jonesââ¬â¢ states ââ¬ËViking motives overseas were routed in human natureââ¬â¢, with motives ranging from ââ¬Ëland to farm, wealth to make life splendidââ¬â¢ and even for merely ââ¬Ëdignity and fameââ¬â¢[3]. Therefore it can be said that many monasteries and religious institutions were merely targeted for their wealth, not as a pagan attack on the Christian faith. There are little to no records of the Vikings ever forcibly converting people to paganism, when they settled they usually dissolved into other cultures. However, with the brutality and viciousness of some documented raids such as the raids on Paris (885-886), it is understandable why people feared for their faith. The Vikings were Pagans, following and praying to many gods, such as Thor, Odin and Freyja, each playing different roles in Viking culture and life. Norse paganism had no orthodoxy of belief and no figurehead, therefore was hugely dissimilar to the Christian faith. Accounts of the Christian King of East Anglia, St. Edmundââ¬â¢s, death in 855 is a brutal account of Danish and pagan ferocity against a particular Christian individual, even using him as target practice before murdering him[4]. Incidents like this, led to a growing sense of fear among Christians regarding the Viking ââ¬Ëheathensââ¬â¢. Thus, being Pagans, Vikings had no religious respect for holy institutions of Christianity, raiding vulnerable monastic sites such as Lindisfarne, Skye and Rathlin. However, although to the monks inhabiting these areas this may look like a direct Norse attack on European Christianity, this was not the case. It can be proven that Viking attacks on churches were not of religious origins, as ââ¬Ëpoorer churches and communities were left alone at the expense of richer establishmentsââ¬â¢ and the choices of attacking the richer institutes was ââ¬Ëpragmatic rather than ideologically motivatedââ¬â¢[5]. It also should be noted that religious artefacts held no meaning to the Vikings, and the majority were left in place, showing that theses raids were economically motivated, not for religious desecration. It should also be acknowledged, that the monks writing the accounts of Viking raids, may be prone to exaggeration, which may have fuelled the fear on the Scandinavian traders, and increase paranoia, especially in coastal regions. A monk Simeon of Durham described a brutal raid ââ¬Ëthey miserably ravaged and pillaged everything; they trod the holy things under their polluted feet, the dug down the alters and plundered all the treasures of the church. [6]ââ¬â¢ For local people hearing these kinds of accounts, the told defilement of religious objects mentioned, would more than likely appear as a siege on Christian establishments. Therefore, it is understandable why people may have believed the Viking raids were religiously motivated, although much destruction and bloodshed was involved, the raids were sporadic and often targeted non religious places also. We now know that the Vikings main driving force was wealth, leading to their attraction to the monasteries. The Vikings did not threaten Christianity with their raids, merely instilled fear of their own religion into Christians, attacking the physical aspects of the Church, rather than a crusade against the Christian faith itself. Yet, in the case of the Carolingian Empire in the 9th century, it can be said the Vikings threatened Christianity to a greater extent there than the rest of Europe, as the Empire was already in a fragile and precarious state and therefore a more inviting target for Viking raiders. The raids on Francia were interpreted as religiously motivated, with monks believing ââ¬Ëthe invasions represented a punishment for the Frankââ¬â¢s sins in fulfilment of biblical prophecyââ¬â¢[7]. Many of the documented raids written by Frankish monks describe the Vikings as ââ¬Ëpaganiââ¬â¢, indicating supposed religious motivation behind the attacks. The raids certainly acted as a catalyst in the decline of the Carolingian Empire as well as religious unity within the country, yet H. Zettel argues that although the raids contributed to the fragmentation of Carolingia, they were not a form of ââ¬Ëmilitant paganismââ¬â¢ and therefore not religiously motivated[8]. Although other historians disagree with this notion, with Wallace- Hadrill stating paganism was indeed an important driving factor behind the raids, and the Vikings viewed raids on Francia as its own ââ¬Ëholy warââ¬â¢[9]. Yet we also have to take into consideration that many other factors also contributed to the fall of the Carolingians, and Christianity continued in France long after the Vikings refrained from raiding Frankish shores, leading to the observation that the threat could never have been extensive, as Christianity was never defeated in the country. However this did not stop the overall feeling of fear and persecution in Francia, and the Viking raids acted as a catalyst in the fall of one of Europeââ¬â¢s superpowers. The main threat to Christianity in Carolingia stemmed mainly from the Franks own theology regarding the Viking attacks, considering them a sign towards the apocloypse and ââ¬Ëthat the last days were at handââ¬â¢, and there fear of ââ¬Ëa general lapse back into Germanic paganismââ¬â¢[10]. This led to religious panic and combined with the Frankish civil wars led to an overall defeat in morale and religious unity. The Vikings played a role in the fragmenting of the Carolingian Empire, threatening Christianity to an extent that broke peopleââ¬â¢s faith and had them doubting their lives, believing the end was nigh. However, if this was an intentional tactic by the Vikings is hard to decipher. It is clear that Christianity in the Carolingian Empire was definitely damaged by the Vikings, as can be seen in the apocalyptic thoughts of the time so a threat was definitely posed, but not a great enough one to defeat Christianity for good or convert people to their pagan ways. The Vikings most likely unintentionally, contributed to the end of one of the worldââ¬â¢s great superpowers, threatening Christianity in the short term, and terrorising people to such an extent, some prayed for the apocalypse, leading to an overall threat to Christian unity. Another important point to take into account is the Vikings conversion to Christianity themselves, with baptism of Danes starting in 823. This leads to the question of how much of a threat could the Vikings have been causing to Christianity if slowly but surely they were being Christianised themselves? King Harald was baptized in 826, proving the dawning of Christianity in Scandinavia. The notion that Christianity was spreading through Scandinavia however can actually be used as an argument for or against the threat the Vikings posed to the faith. For one, especially during the late 9th century, the Vikings may have been less inclined to attack religious institutions, yet conversely the infiltration of Christianity may fuel the hatred of those still Pagan, and further draw Viking raiders to using Churches as targets, therefore still proving a threat. However, the process of Christianisation in Scandinavia was a long, drawn out process, and according to J. Frederick Hodgetts, paganism was never truely defeated. He states ââ¬Ëthey had been clad in Christian guise, it is true, but their origin is Pagan, and Pagan they remainââ¬â¢[11]. This may mean the threat to Christianity, although a benign one, only died when paganism did, as long as pagan traditions remained so did the lurking threat. However this goes back to the argument, that paganism had little or nothing to do with the raids, so the Christianisation of Scandinavia was an evolved movement, casting water over any sparks of pagan threat that might still be alight, even if paganism still remained in the minority, once the majority began to turn to Christianity, the threat was nonexistent, if there ever had been one in the first place. The 9th century however was merely the beginning of a colossal religious transformation, but one that should be noted in relation to the threat posed to Christianity. It seems that the threat was diminishing before it even started with Christian missions being sent to Scandinavia maybe as early as 710. As said by DuBois in his book detailing the long conversion to Christianity ââ¬ËThe Viking age was a time of consolidation: an ear in which a variety of pre Christian belief systems diminished in numberââ¬â¢ clearly referring the paganism and the ââ¬Ëthreatââ¬â¢ that accompanied it. DuBois makes the point that all non Christians in the 9th century were depicted as ââ¬Ëenemies, prone to violence, acts of deviousness, ignorance and sometimes utter stupidityââ¬â¢ and that theseââ¬â¢ non Christiansââ¬â¢ in Scandinavia all fell under the term ââ¬Ëpaganââ¬â¢[12]. Yet with Christianity being infiltrated into Scandinavia almost as soon as the Viking age began, it can be said that as soon as these ââ¬Ënon Christiansââ¬â¢ were converted, the threat of these ââ¬Ëenemiesââ¬â¢ and their acts of ââ¬Ëdeviousnessââ¬â¢ were diminished. The overall threat the Vikings posed to Christianity in the 9th century was being counter acted from the very beginning by their own conversion, a struggle which would eventually tame the Vikings, and exterminate a threat that concerned only the physical nature of the Church, Christianity remained alight in Europe long after the Vikings had been absorbed into the faith themselves. Overall, it would see that these various points direct towards a conclusion of a small yet terrifying threat to Christianity during the 9th century. Yet the fragmentation of Carolingia was due to many factors and not just the brutal Viking raids, however they did play a major role. But Christianity was never threatened within Francia, with it being the main religion still to this day. The question is what constitutes to a threat on Christianity, is it a threat to Christian unity in the community, a threat to peoples personal faith, or a threat to the institution itself. In some senses, the Vikings did all of these, threatening Christian unity in the Carolingian empire, breaking already fragile communities into terrified groups, which also led to people believing apocalyptic thoughts and questioning their own faith. The Vikings threatened mainly the religious metaphors and symbols of the Church, yet for completely non religious motives. The institute of Christianity was never really threatened. An attack on the papacy was never carried out and most areas remained untouched by Viking raids. The 9th century yes was a tumultuous time for those being affected by Viking raids, but it is impossible to say that the threat to Christianity was anything more than terror tactics, by an actually well advanced race, rather than an attempted extermination of Christians by forced conversion to paganism. In conclusion the threat to Christianity in the 9th century was definitely present in theory, but never manifested itself into a direct siege on the church and was an almost un intentional threat. Paganism slowly died out, and Christianity remained the dominant force in Europe, and one the Vikings themselves gradually succumbed to. The ninth century ended, with Christianity still intact, as it was before and would be for over a thousand years to come.
